Research Description: 

Dr. Thomas earned his B.S. and M.S in Nutrition, with an emphasis on Clinical Nutrition and Wellness from East Carolina University. After becoming a Registered Dietitian in 2001, he worked as a Clinical Dietitian in Greensboro, NC. His primary responsibilities as a clinician included managing medical nutrition therapy for patients in general medicine, cardiac, rehabilitation, and intensive care units.

Dr. Thomas completed his Ph.D in Nutrition at the University of North Carolina Greensboro and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship at the University of Kansas. Throughout his doctoral and postdoctoral studies, Dr. Thomas expanded his clinical knowledge base to include aspects of exercise physiology, sports nutrition, body composition, and hormone physiology. Dr. Thomas is a Board Certified Specialist in Sports Dietetics (CSSD). He is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical & Sports Nutrition in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Kentucky.

Nutrition Intervention to Reduce Symptoms in Patients with Advanced Heart Failure
The major goals of this project are to test the effects of a 6-month nutrition intervention of dietary sodium reduction combined with supplementation of lycopene and omega-3 fatty acids on heart failure symptoms, health-related quality of life, and time to heart failure rehospitalization or all-cause death.

The Effects of Concentrated Beetroot Juice in Head and Neck Cancer
The major goals of this project are to investigate therapeutic outcome improvement, compliance with therapy, and changes in muscle and fat composition using beetroot juice supplement for enterally fed patients undergoing chemoradiotherapy for head and neck cancers.

Marine Special Operators: Performance Optimization and Injury Prevention
The overall objective of this research project is to scientifically develop an injury prevention and performance optimization program that is culturally-specific and dynamically responsive to the unique tactical demands of the MARSOC Operator. This research will increase the physical readiness of the Operator by reducing the risk of musculoskeletal injury and optimizing performance.

A Randomized Controlled Trial of Vitamin D supplementation in Collegiate Swimmers and Divers
The goal of this project was to monitor the change in 25(OH)D in athletes supplemented with 4000IU/d of vitamin D3 over 6 months. Changes in body composition, bone turnover, and ultraviolet B exposure were also assessed.

The goal of this project was to evaluate the effect of a 6 month (3-days/wk) supervised, progressive resistance training program with increased daily milk intake on body composition and cardiovascular risk factors in untrained adolescents.
